Homework Plan

In accordance with Board Policy 6154, Oliveira Elementary School has adopted the following Homework Plan.

(info from 2011)

The total time for student homework will be within the district adopted standards of:

10-15 minutes per evening (or 40-60 minutes per week) for kindergarten

10-30 minutes per evening (or 40-120 minutes per week) for grades 1st/2nd

30-45 minutes per evening (or 120-180 minutes per week) for grades 3rd/4th

45-60 minutes per evening (or 180-240 minutes per week) for grades 5th/6th

Homework will be reasonable in expectation, appropriate to the developmental needs of the students, and relevant to instruction.

Homework will be reviewed, corrected, and feedback will be given to students.

Students with excused absences will be allowed the same number of days as absences to complete homework.

Teachers will communicate Classroom Homework Plans to parents and students in writing and at Back to School Night.

This School Homework Plan will be re-evaluated annually and communicated to parents in our newsletter and website.

We highly encourage additional reading on a nightly basis.  Reading is the foundation to every aspect of your child’s educational journey.

(The Board supports the development of life-long readers. In accordance with State content standards, the following are recommended guidelines in addition to their regular school reading.

By grade 4, read one-half million words annually, roughly 20-30 minutes per night.

By grade 8, read one million words annually, roughly 20-30 minutes per night.

By grade 12, read two million words annually, roughly 20-30 minutes per night.)
